DFL at UNICEF Data Governance Workshop in Florence
In January, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the draft rules for implementing the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act)–India’s first comprehensive data privacy law, applicable to all sectors.
The draft lays down operational obligations for data processors, special protections for children, user rights, and a grievance redressal mechanism through the newly established Data Protection Board of India.
Last week, DFL's Senior Research Manager, Aarushi Gupta, delivered a lightning talk at the UNICEF Data Governance Workshop in Florence.
Titled "Data governance in Edtech: Perspectives from India", the talk explored the contours of formal instruments for edtech data governance, their real-world implementation, and the gap between the two.
The workshop brought together 21 experts in privacy and data governance, including academics, civil society representatives, data protection authorities, and UN colleagues. Part of a global effort to advance child-centered data governance, the workshop participants explored some of the most urgent challenges in EdTech data governance - from balancing data use with privacy, to strengthening cybersecurity in schools, enabling meaningful youth participation, and addressing the widening digital divide.
As a follow-up, DFL held the regional consultation on Edtech and Data Governance in Asia in collaboration with Tech Legality and UNICEF Innocenti.
