How is Generative AI reshaping creative work in India? This project explores its impact on entertainment industries and workers' rights, while imagining fairer, more vibrant futures for creativity, solidarity, and collective action.

As AI is rapidly adopted across various sectors, including judicial processes in India, this project seeks to develop usage guidelines & ethical procurement processes to ensure that AI integration adheres to natural justice principles & advances public interest.

Under this project, we identify barriers & enablers for open-source voice technologies in India to develop best practices and recommendations for their responsible development and use.

AI-enabled tools can transform overburdened healthcare systems, but come with significant risks. We’re developing a risk assessment and mitigation framework to ensure the safe, ethical, and responsible adoption of AI in Indian healthcare systems.

Making AI systems open-source could democratise the AI ecosystem. But, open-source AI could contribute to newer forms of data extractivism. This year we explore some of these tensions & develop recommendations for Indian policymakers & AI developers.

What are the tech & political decisions needed today to shape safe, fair & sustainable futures? Through participatory foresight & storytelling, we examine the near-future risks & unintended consequences of GenAI use in critical social sectors in India.

AI can aid climate action but also contributes to the worsening of the climate crisis. We produce a monthly newsletter & podcast to cut through the hype around AI & Climate Action in Asia, surfacing the latest scientific research & expert insights.

As India’s first capacity-strengthening programme targeted at social impact organisations, the Fellowship helps grow knowledge frameworks, tools & capacities for Responsible AI, through 1:1 mentoring, peer exchange, & expert lectures.

LLMs in India can drive access to crucial information & services, but come with risks including bias & informational harms. This study explored gender bias across the LLM lifecycle & developed bias mitigation strategies for developers & policymakers.

We support grantees of Gates Foundation’s Global Grand Challenges to advance responsible GenAI in LMICs. Under this initiative, we help shape ethical, gender-equitable AI solutions for social impact through expert guidance, peer learning & research.

We examine the opportunities, challenges and risks at the intersectio of AI and Climate Action in nine countries in South and South East Asia.

This project brought together eleven of Asia’s leading scholars to explore regional perspectives on the ethics and governance of Artificial Intelligence.
