AI Risk Assessment and Mitigation Tool
We support the responsible adoption of AI-based screening devices in India by providing clinicians and healthcare organisations (collectively, ‘practitioners’) with a practical procurement tool to identify, assess, and respond to the different kinds of risks involved in incorporating AI-based screening devices in regular practice. The tool is organised across three iterative stages of the procurement lifecycle:
- Appraisal stage: to assess contextual suitability and readiness of the AI-based device
- Pre-deployment stage: to identify technical, ethical, and workflow risks and design mitigation strategies
- Integration stage: to safely embed AI within clinical workflows guided by human-computer interaction principles
The tool includes a structured set of questions that informs practitioners about associated risks and harms, supports their interpretation of information provided by developers, and outlines available risk-mitigation measures. The tool also bridges the gap between developers and deployers by developing a common vocabulary among multiple stakeholders—healthcare practitioners, AI developers, regulatory bodies, and policymakers — on risks, harms, and mechanisms to mitigate risks and attribute liability.
