Responsible Computing in India: A Landscape Analysis for the Mozilla Foundation

Urvashi Aneja

This report analyses the landscape of responsible computing in undergraduate computer science education in India and offers recommendations for the Mozilla Foundation and USAID’s implementation of the Responsible Computing Challenge in the country.

For the study, Digital Futures Lab understood a responsible computing education as that which includes programmes, courses and other interventions that help computer science students understand and critically evaluate the social impacts of software and emerging technologies.

Summary of findings:

  • Very few courses directly support the promotion of responsible computing
  • Premier institutions are better equipped and structured to support the introduction of responsible computing curricula
  • Students are not incentivised to pursue courses on responsible computing
  • Faculty are sceptical about student uptake of such courses and the broader impact of such interventions
